Ceylon Tea History

The story of tea in Sri Lanka begins with the collapse of a once-thriving coffee industry. A devastating disease known as “coffee rust” swept across the island, ending the coffee era and leaving plantation owners searching for alternatives. This turning point set the stage for the birth of Ceylon tea.

Tradition maintain that the Dutch introduced the tea plant in the 17th century during their occupation of the Island. However, it was only in 1824 during the British colonial times that the first documented introduction took place, when a handful of plats from China were grown at the newly established Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. More tea plants followed over the next few years, this time from Assam. Some formed a nursery at Peradeniya, others were transferred to the highlands of Nuwara Eliya to assess how they fared at altitude.

George Thwaites, the renowned Director of the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, convinced the Ceylon government of tea’s commercial potential and obtained a quantity of Assam tea seed. This seed was given to James Taylor, a well-respected Scottish coffee planter, to assess its commercial suitability. He recognized as the pioneer of the island’s tea industry. Taylor was the superintendent of Loolecondera estate. In 1867, Taylor planted 20 acres of tea on this estate. He received advice from former Assam tea platers as to how to grow this new crop. Taylor even perfected the technique of fine plucking- ‘two leaves and a bud
